I believe taste is contextual. And of all the contexts, I know, down deep in my bones, that nothing tastes more satisfying than a meal after a long, cold day in the snow.
I grew up in Colorado, and, by extension, skiing. And after years of stale chairlift jerky and Powerbars (RIP chalky mouth morsels), I discovered a deeper truth about mountain dining - it's not just about fueling the body so you can shred the gnar (a phrase I’ve most definitely said during my youth), but about nourishing the soul.
As any bone-tired bro with a neon beanie and a board knows, the magic truly happens during après-ski, when rosy-cheeked, helmet-haired skiers and snowboarders gather around an outdoor fire to swap stories. The combination of tired legs, stew, and steaming mugs of mulled cider or hot cocoa creates an atmosphere that's impossible to replicate anywhere else.
Alpine meals truly exist in that perfect Venn-diagram overlap, where the harshness of winter and the nourishment of the mountain meet…
